Physiotherapeutic rehabilitation exercise after stroke

Goal of the exercise:

  • Improved coordination during walking
  • Attaining normal rhythmical walk
  • Improved coordination of the arms
  • Return back to the ordinary day life activities
  • Involving body in correct movement stereotypes
  • Suppressing wrong movement reactions
  • Inducing new and better movement reactions
  • Stabilized walk
  • Stronger grip
  • Smooth performance of everyday life movements
  • Improved control and stability of the trunk
  • Rediscovery and improvement of certitude
Default position
  • Stand up in a straight posture
  • Try to transfer the weight of your body onto the affected side of the body
Phase 1
  • Move your healthy leg in front of your weaker leg
  • Fully transfer all your weight on the healthy leg
  • Try to feel any sensation, realizing and controlling the weight and support on one or both legs
  • Move forward your weaker leg next to the healthy one
  • Repeat the movement

Common mistakes

  • Leaning backwards
  • Deflecting the pelvis to the sides while walking
  • Leaning forwards
  • Extreme stretch in the knees
  • Knees collapse into the “x”shape, make sure to fix your knees

How often to exercise

  • if you experience problems during walking, exercise few times a day, if you are able to perform the exercise correctly
