Bobath exercise - exercise for improved coordination of the torso and arms

Physiotherapeutic rehabilitation exercise after stroke

Goal of the exercise:

  • Improved coordination during walking
  • Attaining normal rhythmical walk
  • Improved coordination of the arms
  • Return into ordinary day life activities
  • Involving body into correct movement stereotypes
  • Suppressing wrong movement reactions
  • Inducing new and better movement reactions
  • Stabilized walk
  • Stronger grip
  • Smooth performance of everyday life movements
  • Improved control and stability of the trunk
  • Rediscovery and improvement of certitude
Default position
  • Sit on the bed
  • Keep your thighs on the bed as well
  • Keep your lower legs relaxed
Phase 1
  • Keep your trunk straight, turn to one side
  • Stretch out both of your hands and lean on them on the same side
  • With exhale relax your arms and slightly bend them in your elbows
  • Do a small controlled push up, with your chin slightly pointing to your chest
Phase 2
  • Breathe in and return back into the default position
  • Do the same on the other side
  • Repeat the whole exercise

Common mistakes

  • The elbow is stretched out too much (in shape of a sabre)
  • Bending back, shoulder joint is significantly pushed forward (shoulder blade is not “inserted” in the thorax)
  • Lifting your shoulders up
  • Holding the breath
  • Pushing your head too much forward (pointing the chin forward)

How often to exercise

  • Repeat 7 times on each side
