Relaxation of the neck muscles

Illustration of a physiotherapeutic method for relaxation of the front side of the neck, during which your throat muscles are relaxed. You can use this method especially if you suffer from cervicobrachial syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, scalene syndrome or tingling hands.

 

Goal of the exercise:

  • Relaxation of the scalene muscles
  • Relaxation of the throat and neck muscles
  • Relieved tension in the area of the throat and neck
Default position
  • Sit on a chair
Phase 1
  • Place your hands on top of each other and on the ribs below the collarbone
  • Create a slight pressure
Phase 2
  • Tilt your head back
  • Bend your head to left so that you would feel pressure between your jaw and  the collarbone
  • With inhale point your eyes down
Phase 3
  • With exhale point your eyes up
Phase 4
  • Repeat few times, return to the default position and perform the same way with your head bent to the right

Common mistakes

  • Don't perform in straightened position
  • Holding the breath
  • Eye movement is missing
  • Staying in the stretching position only a short while (moment where you point your eyes up)

How often to exercise

  • With problems in the area of cervical and thoracic spine, head, shoulders or ribs exercise daily
  • In case of prevention exercise 2-3 per week
