Psychomotor development of the child - 19 to 24 months

In today’s part from the serie about psychomotor development of children, we will focus on the period between 19th and 24th month. Today we will also talk about the indicators which you can observe home, whether the development of your child is going in the right direction. Your child is growing very fast, and the personality is beginning to manifest, the child is able to brush teeth alone, wash face, being able to dress and undress with your help, but some activities are still causing little problems. (previous part of the series)


Between the 19th and 21st month

Your child will be in this period gradually learning to lift the toy from the ground, without falling down. Dealing easily with walking backwards and being able to walk on stairs only with pushing one leg, and without holding onto the handrail. The child is also to stop quickly while walking, turn around, and kicking into the ball is also getting easier, meanwhile keeping a balance on one leg for short moment. Your child is excited about everything you are doing yourself. So don’t hesitate to involve your child in your activity.


What can the child do alone?

  • Brushing teeth (but you have to control and alternatively help the child).
  • Trying to  Wash hands and face.

What can the child do with your help?

  • The child is able to cooperate with dressing and undressing.

In the age of 2 years

The child starts to understand rhythm at the age of 2. It is likely that you observed it earlier, that your child likes to dance or play on a musical instrument. Currently the child’s dance movement are starting to be rhythmical. Thanks to dancing, which most children love, is developped with the language skills. Support them in dancing, and you can move along with them in the rhythm of the music. The child will „copy” your movements, and at the same time you will have a lot of fun together.

What can the child do alone?

  • two year old child is able to run (but not stopping and turning while running).
  • The child can easily do a squat and get back up again.


In the age of 2 years


What can the child do alone?

  • The child is able at this age to turn one page at a time while reading a book.
  • The child should be able to put on socks or waistband pants alone.
  • turning a door handle, to open doors (opening doors outwardly is easier).
  • Building a tower of at least 4 cubes.

What should the child be able to do with your help?

  • Being able to pull t-shirt or sweater over the head, but orientation of the front and back and backwards part was always similarly on. 
  • Being able to zip and unzip a jacket - but trying to button a shirt or pants is still very hard.


Tip for a game

As a game, you can let the child independently choose clothes, which will the child wear. Be patient and always take time when dressing up before leaving.



Your child will want to help others and do everything independently. Some children are even getting angry if you try to do something instead of letting them do it. That applies to activities which the child is not capable of doing yet. Therefore armor yourself with patience and peacefulness!

Leader or unconcerned dreamer?

Personality of the child begins to be more clear in this age.

  • The child can be either a leader or a child, that listens and thinks more about certain things.
  • The child can be either caring or unconcerned (girls are generally more caring and tender, especially with dolls).
  • The child can accept the critique either easily or with tears

Feeling of responsibility

Show your child, how to deal with problems. Put more and more responsibility on your child, which the child is able to cope with (for example: clearing out the plastic tableware from the dishwasher, clearing away the toys before sleep etc.). Give the toddler enough time, in order to focus on the important things and finishing the task. If the child asks you for help, always immediately help and try to take the focus from failures to positive things or encouraging the child that next time it will be better.


Between 19th and 21st month

Speech becomes comprehensive and more sophisticated in this age. The vocabulary of the child becomes variable. Some children can actively at the age of two use 30 words, other children are able to compose simple sentences and their active vocabulary contains around 100 words.

All children should be able to ask simple questions around the age of 2:

„where are you going?” and give one or two word responses: „there”. And they often understand phrases. They understand terms „mine” and „I can’t”.

By many children is the coordination of the tongue and articulation of the speaking organs are undeveloped. Therefore only the close ones usually understand the child, who learned to „understand” the child.

In 19th month

It is ideal to start with reading „real” books with a simple text and many illustrations by a year and half old child. You will support that way the development of the vocabulary of the child. At first it will seem that reading is for the child a little too difficult, but with more time you will see that the child quickly adopts the new words and actively uses them, as well as using the correct grammar.


We bring you a recipe for games: prepare a homemade bubble blower or a dough for modeling.

Magic with bubbles

Children around one year start to be fascinated by the bubbles, and they will be thrilled to blow them. If you would like to made a bubble blower for your toddler, we explain a simple instruction.

Homemade bubble blower

Dissolve 180 ml of liquid detergent or baby shampoo in 1,8 l of water. Add 240 ml of glycerine for strengthening the wall of the bubble. Construct the blower simply from a wire, by twisting one end into a circle shape.


For development of the gentle motor skills of the hand it is ideal to for example modeling. If you are advocate, that the child should not come into contact with anything that could be improper for eating, we wrote down a recipe for a modeling dough made. It probably won’t be very tasty for the child, but you can at least be assured that nothing will happen to your child in case your toddler decides to taste it.

The density of the dough depends on you, that is how much water will you add to the dough. For smaller children we recommend to make the dough smoother and softer. If the dough is too solid, the child won’t be able to model anything out of it, and it won’t be as entertaining anymore.

  • Children younger than 1,5 year will tear the dough, squeeze it, and generally getting to know with the material.
  • Children around 2 years old are able to make a snail, by making a snake and pressing a shell on it, which you can find during a walk in the nature.

Mix 425 grams of flour, 120 ml. of oil and 120 ml. of water. Mix the dough. If you need, add water to work with the dough. For colorful variety you can split the dough into several parts, and color them differently with food colors.
