Polarized light podoscope

CLpodoskop1Podoscope is modern and diagnostic machine for diagnosis of orthopedic defects of the feet. Thanks to high intensity of luminosity it enables to observe the foot plant, highlighting the points on the foot and the differing pressure. Highly durable acrylic plate, helps to optimally conducts the polarized light, and shows defects in small leg joints, posture, pressure and rotation in heel bone and individual parts of the feets compared to each other. Examination on the podoscope will also reveal defects in axis of the ankles.

Function of the healthy leg

Healthy leg is leaning on terrain on its metatarsal toe bone, metatarsal pinky toe and heel bone. Three transversal arches and two longitudinal arches of the foot are attached between these points. None of the arches are fixed, during walk these arches are enabling maximal suspension when the foot hits the floor. The steps are thanks to arches subdued and there are no vibrations transmitted keeping the knee and hip joints and spine healthy.

Direction of overload of healthy leg

When inspecting the leaning points on the foot, it is obvious the heel bone and metatarsal toe bone are leaving stronger mark than metatarsal pinky toe. This condition is caused by spreading the weight (location of the center of the gravity). The most overloaded area is the area representing weight of the body (direction of the force).

We can observe the overload of the healthy leg in axis leading from middle of the heel - inner side of the feet - metatarsal bones. In these parts the vector is coiling inside. Approximately 75% of the force goes through the metatarsal toe bone and 25% goes through the metatarsal pinky toe.


Static problems

It happens also in case with healthy leg, when the direction of weight bearing goes through the inner side of the heel bone. It depends on the force of the muscle as well as firmness and flexibility of the ligaments, to what extent if can hold the arches of the feet in correct setting. Significant pressure on the inner edge of the foot creates too much force, which runs through inner arc of the longitudinal arch, the ligaments then do not hold the arch in correct setting and that leads to fallen arches (flat feet). Flat feet can be visible only during static weight bearing (standing) meanwhile during dynamic weight bearing (walking) the arch can be supported dynamically by using the feet muscles. It is therefore important to determine the condition of the ligament and bone structure, as well as the function of the core muscles and posterior chain within the movement system, which results in centering the knee and the hip joints as well as the spine.

Reasons of flat feet

  • Disruption of statics or by collapsing of one of the arches
  • Injury (fractures of small bones of the foot, damaged feet joints)
  • Overweight
  • Incorrect regime, lack of physical activity
  • Hormonal changes (effects of estrogen on higher elasticity of the ligament tissue)

Pressure examination

On the basis of the image we can assess the condition of the statics and dynamics of the feet. When the feet touch the illuminated acrylic surface of the machine, it forms on the lower side characteristic patterned image. Light rays of the polarized light are bending on the lower surface of the acrylic desk in area of foot pressure. At the same time these is proportional amount of the light and pressure, which has an effect on the surface. Result of this method is brightness of the image.

You can check out the video demonstration of the podoscope, which measures pressure on the parts of the feet differently. With its help we can find out orthopedic defects on the feet or whether we have wrong posture of the pelvis or spine.
