Learning to walk with forearm crutches or underarm crutches - walking down the stairs

Training the gait with crutches - many surgeons recommend to disburden the operated leg from the beginning (in the beginning the leg has to be completely disburdened, from 6th week you can start with gradual burdening and after 3-6 months you can fully burden your leg).

Goal of the exercise:

  • Training to walk with forearm or underarm crutches (walking on the flat surface)
  • Training to walk after the surgery (TEP of the knee or hip joint)
  • Training to walk with a broken leg
Default position
  • Set the crutches to a correct height (by underarm crutches, the hands should be slightly below the hand bars)
  • Keep your shoulders straight, straighten your spine
Phase 1
  • Place the crutches against the stairs in front of you
Phase 2
  • Place the affected leg between the crutches without putting any weight on it
Phase 3
  • Step forward with your healthy leg
  • Continue to walk this way

Common mistakes

  • Doing the first step with the healthy leg, putting weight on the injured leg
  • Incorrectly set height of the crutches, slouching back

How often to exercise

  • Use the crutches according to the recommendation of your doctor
