Relaxation of the jaw muscle and relieving the tension of the chewing muscles

This exercise is part of physiotherapeutic method for relieving the muscles of the lower jaw joint. This technique can be used when chewing and yawning is painful, and it can be caused by stress, tension in the muscles and teeth grinding.

Goal of the exercise:

  • Relaxation of the jaw muscle
  • Increasing movement range when opening the mouth
Default position
  • Lay on your back and bend your knees
  • Place the tips of your fingers inside your mouth on the lower jaw (lower teeth)
Phase 1
  • Open your mouth as wide as possible
  • Exhale
  • Take a deep breath in and open your mouth even more (as if you’d want to yawn)
  • With exhale relax
  • Repeat at least 3 times

Common mistakes

  • The mouth is not wide open before stretching
  • When lying down, the head is bending too much
  • The stretch is not performed with inhale

  • During problem exercise daily
