Relaxation of the jaw muscles - relieving the chewing muscles

This exercise is part of the physiotherapeutic method for relieving the muscles in the area of the jaw joints. You can use this technique in case you feel pain while chewing, yawning and it has been caused by stress, muscle tension and teeth grinding.


Goal of the exercise:

  • Relaxing/stretching jaw muscle
  • Increased movement range
Default position
  • Sit into a straight posture
  • Place your left hand (the area between thumb and index finger) on the left side of your lower jaw
  • Keep your elbow in the level of your shoulder joint, and your forearm is in parallel with the ground
  • Relax your lower jaw
  • Instructions for performing the movement:
  • Press your hand against the jaw, so the jaw would slightly move to the right
  • Take a deep breath
  • Lightly push your jaw against the hand (it’s not apparent movement, we should just feel a stretch of the muscle)
  • With exhale try to push your jaw against slightly to the right
  • Repeat the whole exercise at least three times, and then do the same also on the other side

Common mistakes

  • Poor sitting posture
  • The head is not straightened up
  • Wrong contact in the lower jaw
  • The movement of the arm is not made from the elbow
  • There is no pressure against the hand
  • Holding your breath

How often to exercise

  • During problems, you can exercise daily
