Representation of a repositioning maneuver during a presence of otoliths front of the inner ear

This maneuver is used during a disorder in the front area of the inner ear of the vestibular system. This disorder is quite rare. Do not perform this maneuver without consulting your condition with your doctor or physiotherapist.

Goal of the exercise:

  • The goal of the exercise is to return the otoliths back to the utricle
Default position
  • Lay down on your back
Phase 1
  • Bend your head by 60°, ideally over the edge of your bed or therapeutic table
  • Remain in the position for 40 seconds or up to 1 minute (this position should evoke vertigo)
Phase 2
  • Return your head back to the horizontal position, then turn your head to the side by 45°
  • Remain in the position for 40 seconds or up to 1 minute
Phase 3
  • Now go up and rest on your elbows, the head is now in 45° angle against horizontal line
  • Remain in the position for 40 seconds or up to 1 minute
Phase 4
  • Slowly sit back up keeping your head straight
  • Remain in this position at least for 5 minutes

Common mistakes

  • Not staying in the positions long enough

How often to exercise

  • Do the maneuver max. 2 times
  • You can repeat the maneuver the next day if problems return
