Increased mobility (mobilisation) of the lumbar spine with physiotherapist

We bring you an exercise tutorial, which we perform during acute lumbago and blockages. This exercise is a little more difficult, it demands practical experience and physiotherapeutic skill. But primarily it has to be performed correctly, so that you wouldn't worsen your condition, therefore we would recommend you to practice this exercise with professional physiotherapist.

Goal of the exercise:

  • Mobilizing the lumbar spine in flexion
  • Removing acute painfulness in the thorax area and ribs
  • During pain in the lumbar area or in the sacroiliac joint (SI joint)
Default position

Instructions for the therapist:

  • Lay your client down on the side
  • Hand, on which the client lies is placed beneath his/her head
  • The second arm is freely resting on the side
  • Lower leg is stretched out on the mat
  • The upper leg is slightly bending in the knee and the instep is fixed behind the knee of the lower leg
Phase 1
  • When the therapist move, the client breathes in and goes with the chest against the therapist
  • That is followed by exhale and relief
  • In the next phase of the exercise, client drops the upper leg down over the edge of the massaging table
  • This time the client moves against the therapist with his/her bottom
  • That is followed by exhale and relief

Common mistakes

  • Inexperienced therapist
  • Wrong fixation of the spine segments
  • Too big or too small resistance of the therapist against the countermovement of the client
  • Insufficient relaxation during exhale and relief

How often to exercise

  • Exercise only on the basis of previous examination, and whether or not, a blockage has been located
  • Do not repeat the exercise sooner than 48 hours
  • Generally we avoid too often mobilizations
  • For mobilization is ideal also a stabilizing element/exercise, so that the blockage and further mobilization wouldn't be necessary
