Mobilization of the spine “fork variation”

This exercise is based on physiotherapeutic technique, extending the lumbar spine, which is used especially during blockages of the spine, most frequently in the lumbar and thoracic segments of the spine.

Goal of the exercise:

  • Remove blockage from the given spine segment
  • Regaining the mobility of the joints between each vertebrae
Default position

Instructions for patient:

  • Lay on your stomach
  • Keep your arms alongside your body, place your insteps on the therapeutic table/bed or place them slightly over the edge (for maximum decrease in tension of the back muscles)

Instructions for therapist:

  • Stand next to the table/bed, press nd and 3rd finger of your hand on the transverse vertebrae, place your second hand on the fingers of your opposite hand

Phase 1

Instructions for therapist:

  • Gently push your hand against the fingers, which is in direct contact with patient’s back, this way you mobilize the affected segment of the spine
  • In order to create a pressure use the weight of your body

Common mistakes

  • Inaccurate manual contact
  • Too strong/weak pressure
  • We’re pushing only with hands, but not with the whole body
  • The hand above the fingers is too high, the pressure is damaging the fingers of the lower hand
  • The treated patient has arms above his head

How often to exercise

  • Repeat until the joint doesn’t restore, however be careful with fixed blockages, repeat max. 6-8 times
